From a young age, Wyatt has been active in the sacred music community. As a young child he was playing piano at his home church and performing for weddings, funerals, and community events, and by age 16 he was conducting his church's choir. This experience served him well when he became organist and choirmaster at Saint Nicholas Episcopal Church, Hamilton, GA at the age of 18. He worked closely with the rector and congregation to bring traditional sacred music to the forefront of the musical worship while embracing the other denominational traditions found in the congregation's makeup. In 2018 he worked with the vestry, wardens, and congregation to secure a new organ for the nave. This enabled Poe to create the Postlue Recital Series, in which he brought his world of academic art music to the community of St. Nicholas. While at St. Nicholas, Poe was acitve in the community, hiring instrumentalists and vocalists, as well as rehearsing and conducting the Harris County MLK Day Unity Choir, a community wide project that unified the choirs of numerous local churches and traditions to perform at the MLK Day Festival. In 2020 Poe began at Trinity Episcopal Church as Music Intern, where he broadened his skill set, playing the organ for congregational singing, accompanying choral anthems, singing in the choir, managing handbells, and facilitating in planning and administrative duties. In 2022, Wyatt became the Organist-Choirmaster of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bainbridge, GA, and enjoys planning musical worship, playing for services, and community outreach.
Poe began piano lessons at age 5. In 2016 he began studying the organ at Columbus State University with Joseph Golden. He became invovled in the Columbus AGO and immersed himself in organ repertoire and culture. He accompanied students on their degree recitals and worked with composers to create new organ music and chamber music that utilized the organ. This expanded his stylistic experience to include modern and contemporary works, as well as vocal and instrumental collaboration. He studied collaborative arts with Joseph Golden, where he was reminded of his affinity for the piano and in 2020 began studying piano with Sam Brown in addition to his organ studies. This enabled Poe to refine his technique and understanding of keyboard instruments as a whole. This understanding serves Poe as a pedagogue as well as a performer, so that he can actively incorporate the concepts found in organ and piano pedagogy when teaching his students. Poe also enjoys performing in the community and collaborating with schools and churches.
In 2023 Wyatt began teaching with Making Light Productions. He teaches Piano, Voice, and Ukulele, and music directs Making Light Singers as well as the occasional musical theatre production. In addition to his work as a director, Wyatt enjoys playing keyboard to accompany his students for their musical theatre and commercial repertoire.Â
